This 2.5mm stone setting burr by Cooksongold is a high-quality tool made in Germany from durable stainless steel. Also known as a bearing burr, it is designed for precision work in a wide range of stone setting techniques.

With its cylindrical shape, tapered point, and angled teeth, this burr is perfect for cutting seats and azures, ensuring stones sit securely in place. Suitable for use on metal, wax, and plastic, it offers versatility across different jewellery-making tasks.

A setting burr is particularly useful for the following stone settings in jewellery :

• Seat for the stone : The main function of this burr is to cut a groove or ledge inside a hole or under a prong, which supports the girdle (the widest part) of a gemstone.
• Flush Setting : After drilling a hole into the metal, the setting burr widens and angles the opening so the stone can be inserted just beneath the surface.
• Channel Setting : When setting stones side-by-side in a groove, the burr is used to cut uniform seats into both sides of the channel so each stone fits evenly.
• Beads and Prongs : In these settings, the burr carves into the inside edge of a prong or metal surface so the stone can rest level and flush before the prongs or beads are pushed over it.

Mounted on a 2.34mm shank, it is fully compatible with pendant drills, hobby drills, and micromotors, making it an essential addition to any jeweller’s toolkit.

The amount of material removed depends on the pressure applied.

Use of ‘Burr Life lubricant’ () helps to prolong the burs’ cutting ability.
